Description

*** March 12 2024 update *** New mosaic uploaded of the region which I think handles faint stars and Ha emission much better ***

South of the bar in the LMC is the rather lovely star-formation region of NGC2018.  I was inspired to take this image by @Andy 01 sublime image of this field and by the intriguing note in  @Charles Bracken Sky Atlas identifying NGC2018 "underrated nebula that is ovelooked due to its larger neighbours nearby"

I don't think I have give justice to either in my image, and I certainly plan to return to it later in the season to gather more Ha and [OIII] data, and possibly even to mosaic with the nebula just south of this region.

Although I took 2.5hours in each of Ha, [OIII] and [SII], I found that the [SII] actually made the image worse.  This was even after multiple  attempts at GHS/STF stretches before channel combination, using Bill Blanchard's excellent narrowband normalisation process and messing around in the PixelMath expressions with the otherwise excellent Foraxx SHO palette.

This image here is therefore Foraxx HOO palette, albeit tweaked a little. I have also raised the black point higher than I normally would - in part to reduce the effect of the background LMC stars further and, in part, because I wanted a change.
